9 Habits for Healthy Teeth

Did you know that many dental problems can be prevented by practicing good oral hygiene and having a healthy lifestyle? Continue reading to find out the top nine habits for healthy teeth.

Habits for healthy teeth

1. Brush at least twice a day

Teeth should be brushed at least two times a day for proper care. Brushing should be done using the right toothbrush and toothpaste. Dentists recommend using a toothbrush with soft bristles instead of one with medium or hard bristles. Remember to replace the toothbrush every three to four months.

2. Brush properly

Most people know that they need to brush at least two times a day, but some do not remember how to clean properly. It is simple, one should brush for two minutes and make sure to cover all the surfaces of the teeth while paying particular attention to the gum line. The toothbrush should be moved in circular motions for efficient plaque removal.

3. Clean the tongue

Plaque can build up on the tongue and lead to bad breath and tooth decay. It is essential to brush and clean it properly. Gently brush the tongue after brushing the teeth. Tongue scrapers or cleaners can be used for this, although a toothbrush will also do just fine. Remember to scrape or brush the entire surface of the tongue.

4. Floss daily

Flossing can be done once a day. Flossing does not just eliminate plaque and food residue from the spaces between teeth that a toothbrush cannot reach, it also cleans and stimulates the gums around the teeth. This helps to keep the gums healthy and prevent gingivitis.

5. Drink more water

Drinking water is not only great for overall health — it is also good for oral health. Drinking water after taking a sugary drink will help rinse the sugars off the teeth and prevent the accumulation of plaque. Drinking water after every meal can also help wash out some adverse effects of acidic and sticky foods.

6. Eat a healthy diet

A healthy diet is essential for the overall well-being of the body, including oral health. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables can help stimulate the flow of saliva. This helps remineralize tooth surfaces to prevent decay. Also, eating fresh vegetables and fruits provides the body with a broad spectrum of nutrients for good oral health.

7. Limit sugary foods

Avoid foods with artificial sweeteners and high levels of sugar. Sugar is acidic in nature and it erodes teeth enamel, leading to cavities. Cutting down on sugary foods and acidic drinks is a good step towards proper teeth care.

8. Stay away from tobacco

Using tobacco can cause oral cancer, gum disease, plaque buildup, teeth discoloration and bacteria growth. Simply put, smoking is bad for oral health.

9. See a dentist at least twice a year

Seeing a dentist for regular teeth cleanings and checkups is essential for good oral health. Create a habit of visiting a dentist every six months to get rid of tartar. These visits will also provide an opportunity to spot potential issues early on.

Proper dental care is essential for your health, well-being, and confidence. Neglecting your teeth can lead to serious oral issues which can negatively affect your health, work, and social life.
